Knowledge Mobilization Activities

The GEM Hub is dedicated to mobilizing knowledge to address pregnancy-related near-miss events and deaths. We focus on promoting community-based research, shaping better policies and programs, and creating practical tools for better healthcare outcomes.

Our activities connect research with practice by engaging persons with lived experience, healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, and the wider GEM Hub Community. Here are a few ways we will mobilize knowledge in the coming years.

Town Halls: Creating Space to Exchange with the Public (2024-2028)

Throughout our five-year journey, virtual Town Halls provide an opportunity to share progress and discuss ongoing work. These public forums are designed to gather feedback, encourage open dialogue, and promote accountability. We invite you to be part of these conversations and contribute to shaping the future of our initiatives.

Process Maps: Improving Care Using Human-Centred Design (2024)

Our first knowledge mobilization project advanced a critical need: to support clinical teams wishing to improve care by integrating new practices into their existing workflows. Working with a clinical team at a tertiary healthcare centre, we focused on supporting the implementation of a Maternal Early Warning System (MEWS) protocol, an evidence-based practice that has previously shown promise in reducing severe maternal morbidity and health inequities.

What made this approach different was the use of Human-Centred Design, an innovative way to collectively develop solutions in healthcare. This collaborative work yielded several resources, including the Model of Care and the Change Framework, to support clinical teams planning to conduct quality improvement initiatives integrating new evidence-based practices, such as MEWS protocols, in a human-centred way.

Research Priority Setting: Partnering with Communities (2025-2027)

Our Research Priority Setting initiative will identify the research questions and topics most relevant to communities disproportionately impacted by pregnancy-related near-miss events and deaths. By fostering partnerships with prioritized groups, we aim to pave the way for future collaborative work, influence funding and policies to address the priorities of affected communities, and, in turn, co-create impactful initiatives going forward.

Educational Material: Enhancing and Building Capacity to Review Near-Miss Events (2025-2027)

Pregnancy-related near-miss events hold valuable learnings that can be accessed through in-depth reviews. This project, bringing together persons with lived experience, healthcare professionals, and decision-makers, aims to improve the way that we conduct these reviews. Together, this diverse team will develop educational resources to support person-centered, culturally appropriate, and gender-sensitive near-miss event reviews. By incorporating multiple perspectives, these resources will help healthcare teams to review near-miss events holistically. Once developed, resources will be widely accessible to anyone interested in conducting these reviews.

Knowledge Repository: Harnessing Current and Future Solutions (2027-2028)

The Hub will create a comprehensive repository of solutions aimed at preventing severe maternal morbidity and mortality in the form of an Evidence and Gap Map. This digital repository, integrating diverse sources of knowledge and ways of knowing, will be openly accessible to provide valuable information for groups working on maternal health initiatives. The Evidence and Gap Map will also serve as a roadmap for future initiatives, centring on identified research priorities for affected people and communities.
